Atlanta police now report the murder of bartender John Henderson at the Standard Food & Spirits may have not been murder at all, and almost all the other details initially released about the crime were inaccurate.
For example, police initially said the other bartender there -- Ashley Elder -- hid in a cabinet while Henderson was shot. Not true, they now say. They also say they were incorrect in saying robbers stood over him, shooting him execution style. Police now claim he was likely killed unintentionally as the robbers shot warning rounds through a closed door.
How did that happen? Why were all the details wrong?
Right now there is no explanation and at the end of the day, it doesn't necessarily matter. Henderson is still dead, and the robbers are still at large. Even so, it is yet another example of how bad the police situation has gotten in this town.
Layoffs and furloughs for police staff have happened as a result of poor city fund management. Add that to the desperation that always accompanies a recession, and we have what is beginning to feel like a crime wave.
The city, though, has banded together through Henderson's death to help address the issue of ever-increasing crime. And that attention is sorely needed. It just doesn't feel safe here in Atlanta anymore, and it seems up to the community to address this.
